Thank you Mr. Dewey!

It's the birthday of Melvil Dewey, born in Adams Center, New York (1851). He went to Amherst, and to support himself there he worked in the college library, and he decided that it needed to be reorganized. At the time, there was no consistent method that libraries used to organize books. Some numbered shelves, some arranged books by size just to look nice, and some libraries tried to alphabetize the whole library, which meant that every time they got a new book they had to redo the entire system. Dewey saw a better way to do this, but for awhile, he couldn't decide whether to be a missionary or to put his time into reorganizing the library system. But he chose the latter, and he started to figure out a system of categories and subcategories, based on older ideas. As he researched, he wrote in his diary, "My heart is open to anything that's either decimal or about libraries." And he came up with the Dewey Decimal System, which is still used today in many libraries, a series of classifications divided and subdivided into subjects and assigned a decimal number to each book.

Banned Books Drawing Winners

Congratulations to the winners of our Banned Books Week Drawing!

John Belisle received War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells, which was challenged for the brutal nature of the events in the narrative.

Xou (Sue) Yang received The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, which was challenged because of language and sexual references.

Scott Schult received To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, which contains racial slurs and profanity and has been frequently challenged.

Challenges are an attempt to remove material from a library, thereby restricting the access of others. Celebrate your freedom to read!

Win a Banned Book @ the Century Library

The Century College Library marks Banned Books Week from Sept. 28 through October 3 with a drawing for three challenged or banned books. Enter the drawing in the library today!

The books featured in our display have been targets of attempted bannings. Fortunately, while some books were banned or restricted, in a majority of cases the books were not banned, all thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, booksellers, and members of the community to retain the books in the library collections.

For more information on the difference between a challenge and a banning, see About Banned & Challenged Books on the American Library Association web site. In 2008, ALA reported 513 challenges. You can see a list of the top ten most frequently challenged titles in 2008.

More Online Art Images

We've added one more database provided by the Electronic Library of Minnesota, CAMIO. CAMIO stands for Catalog of Art Museum Images Online, and is a collection of images of art from the collections of prominent museums. CAMIO covers prehistoric to contemporary times, including the complete range of expressive forms. You can find CAMIO on our Databases A-Z list, which is linked from the Library's home page. It's also on the Art/Art History and Interior Design Subject Guides.

The Electronic Library of Minnesota (ELM) has dropped the Gale Professional Collection, which contained mostly resources for educators, so that resource is no longer on our Databases A-Z list. However, we've added resources like EBSCO's Professional Development Collection and ERIC, so that should balance it out.

Another New Online Resource - Historical New York Times

We now provide access to a unique online resource from ProQuest, the historical New York Times from 1851 to present. This resource is searchable, full-text, and also includes images. So, not only are the pictures from the newspaper available, but also the ads. This is a fantastic resource for history classes, but other disciplines will be able to use it as well. Look up inauguration speeches from long ago presidents. Read the contemporary account of the battle of Gettysburg or of the 1929 stock market crash. Look at ads over time to see how prices and fashions changed.

You can find this new resource from the library's home page, http://www.century.edu/library/, under Databases A-Z, then look for ProQuest.
