The First Library
On this day in 1731, a group of young men in Philadelphia
pooled their money to set up the first library in America. The
idea for a library came about when Benjamin Franklin started a club with about
50 friends so they could debate about politics, morality, and the natural
sciences. The group was called the Club of Mutual Improvement. When they
disagreed about a topic, they liked to consult books. But books were expensive
in those days, so they combined their resources to found a subscription
library. They called it the Philadelphia Library Company. The rule was that any
"civil gentleman" could browse through the volumes, but only
subscribers were allowed to borrow them. The library expanded over the years.
Later it moved to Carpenter's Hall, the building where the First Continental
Congress met in 1774. Franklin said that after the library opened,
"reading became fashionable, and our people, having no public amusements
to divert their attention from study, became better acquainted with
books." From: The Writer's Almanac for November 8, 2013.

Farewell to Ebrary and Mango, Hello to Ebooks from EBSCO
With the end of the 2013 fiscal year on June 30, the Library is cancelling our subscriptions to the ebook package from Ebrary and the Mango language learning system.
Ebrary is being replaced by a subscription to the Academic Collection through Ebooks from EBSCO. This large collection of ebooks is paid for by the student technology fee. The records for this collection will be searchable through our library catalog within the next few weeks.
The Mango online language learning system was also paid for by the student technology fee. Low usage led the Tech Fee Committee to invest in other technology for the coming fiscal year. If you miss Mango, please speak to your Student Senate representatives.

Library Uses StarID and Gets a New Look for the Catalog
Great news! You can now use your StarID and password to access library resources from off-campus or to
login to your library account to see what you have checked out or to renew
items. For those of you who have your barcode memorized, you can still use that with your last name as password
to login as well.
We are still working to change all our documentation to
reflect StarID access.
In addition to this welcome change, our catalog interface
has been upgraded and looks a little different. The options for limiting
searches have moved from the left side to the right side, but other functionality
is still the same, with the added ability to browse both our ebooks and our
physical books by call number. It’s like virtually browsing the
shelf.
We hope StarID simplifies your library research!
