Food for Fines

It’s November. Are you anticipating that huge Thanksgiving feast? Remember that not everyone will have that option. Feeding America reported that in 2013, nearly one in ten Minnesotans was food insecure, meaning that they lacked enough food for an active, healthy life for all household members.

From November 2 – 23, the Century College Library will be accepting food pantry donations as payment for fines. Donated items will go to Century College Food Pantry. The Pantry is looking for nonperishable snacks or light meals.

Each donated item will be worth $1 off your existing library fines, up to $10. This is a great way to clear any library fines before registering for the spring semester while helping out fellow students. Bring items to the circulation desk and remember to bring your student ID!

Don’t have fines? Bring food anyway!

Suggested items include:
Granola Bars

Pretzels
Fruit Cups
Cereal Cups
Cereal Bars
Fruit Snacks
Applesauce Cups
100 Calorie Packs
Snack Mix
Oatmeal Packets
Cup of Soup

Note:
Food items must be unopened, undamaged, and unexpired.
Food cannot be used to pay previously paid fines.

All current students are eligible to use the Food Pantry and can visit the Food Pantry up to twice per month. The only requirement is either a student ID card or student ID number.

Halloween!

The kids at Busy Bees visited the library to trick or treat for Halloween.They enjoyed posing with our skeleton and our display of scary books!

A Very Century College Library Halloween

Halloween is almost here! Here are a few Century College Library approved ways to celebrate the holiday:

• Get in the mood with a spooky story! Check out the Library’s display case for a great selection which includes favorite authors such as Stephen King and Anne Rice as well as books about ghost and ghouls! 

• If you’re short on time try a classic like The Legend of Sleepy Hollow By Washington Irving or The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe. These classics are short and available online through the Century College Library Catalog. (May require StarID and password)

• Need a last minute Halloween costume? Why not dress as your favorite book character? This chart from Bookish.com can help you figure out a very literary Halloween costume.
  

MEA Hours

The Century College Library will be open from 8AM - 4PM  Thursday, October 15^th and Friday October 16^th.

The Library will be CLOSED Saturday, October 17^th.

Banned Book Week Recap

Banned Books Week is now over. Here's a short recap of our Banned Books Week celebration at Century College Library.

Students commented about Persepolis on our board. Many were surprised to find out so many books they knew were banned or challenged. We had a great week celebrating our freedom to read. Thanks to all those who stopped in, participated and asked questions.

Banned Books Week

Century College Library is celebrating Banned Books Week September 28 – October 3.   Libraries are committed to supporting the freedom to seek and express ideas, even those that some consider unpopular.  Stop in to the library and enter our drawing for a Banned Books tote, pencil case and a copy of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.  Take a moment to participate in BookFace. And check out the library display case and see some of the surprising titles that have been challenged or banned. 

Good News About Scanning in the Library

Scanning print items will soon be much easier.  One of our librarians, Jane Young, has won a digital scanner, the KIC Click Mini. It will scan both pages of an open book or journal placed face up in the cradle. When it arrives, it will be available in our copy room for student use.
